Sweetie

Hatch date 2007

Hi, my name is Sweetie. I am an African Grey Congo. Everyone tells me "how Pretty I am," and that I am a "pretty girl," so I just go along with it. I have finally been DNA tested and I am confirmed female.

I do tend to prefer men over women especially when I'm on my cage.  Once I get over being shy, I do enjoy a good head scratch by the fellows. I'd rather this only to be done by them and not so much the ladies, please don't take it personal-it's just who I am. I will allow the ladies to interact with me once I'm away from my wonderful cage I call home.

Throughout the day I love to climb ropes and destroy any new toy given to me. When I am done with my toys, I enjoy daydreaming out the window on a special perch made just for my kind. I tend to not climb off my cage and explore the floor, but you never know what might spark my attention, so always keep an eye on me as I am a curious bird after all.  I will have several different conversations with my favorite human flock member and also have many tunes that I whistle. Sometimes, I do get a bit needy and will get loud occasionally when I want you around.  Maybe, you can help me correct this bad habit of mine?  Speaking of bad habits, I sometimes feel like my favorite person won't return and I get really nervous.  When I feel this way, I start to pull out my feathers. My foster home calls it plucking.  I did pluck recently, but my feathers are already growing back nicely.

Lets talk about food...I LOVE it! And all kinds too. I enjoy a variety of pellets, nuts and seeds. I especially LOVE fresh food every day. I love food so much that I tend to dig my head into the bowl and scatter my food around. I am a bit messy when I do this, but I just love my food!

My foster home has introduced me to lots of other feathered friends along with dogs and they don't bother me.  I haven't met a cat yet, so I'm not too sure how I would do with them.  I also haven't met any small children in my foster home, so I really don't know if I will trust them or not.  Maybe I should just stick with adults because I know I do like them best.

My foster home also brought me to an Avian Vet. They told me that my complete blood work came back great and my disease testing came back negative.  The Vet did say to make sure my calcium needs were met, being that I am a Grey.  My forever flock should be familiar with birds such as myself so that I can live a nice long life.

Sweeite is being fostered in Leonardo NJ

African Greys are prone to hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) due to their increased need for the mineral in their system, and the differences in the availability of the mineral from supplements and diet. Regular monitoring of blood calcium levels, in addition to veterinary recommended lab work and dietary discussion, is strongly advised. Prompt veterinary care of unusual symptoms is essential.
