The 2022 Abuse Case
The SAFPR Team has been busy with a group of animals we call the 2022 Abuse Case. Now that all the legal issues are settled, we can finally tell you about these animals, be warned - it was not pretty:
Last August (2022), we were asked by the state police to help with an alleged abuse case. We arrived to offer assistance with no idea what we were walking into.
The house was filled with feces & filth. We found 15 abused & neglected animals: 3 bunnies, 1 cat & 11 dogs living in horrific conditions.
One dog was on the front porch in a wire crate not much bigger than him, filled with feces halfway up his body. It was unimaginable. The crate had three padlocks to keep him from escaping & was covered in a towel to keep him hidden. His water bowl was filled with feces too.
The other dogs were covered in feces & skin infections, had long nails & were filled with worms. Marla & Eli pulled the crates out of the house & put the animals in clean crates to be transported to safety. The dogs were so traumatized, they were like putting water in a hot skillet. One dog barked non-stop for weeks after rescue.
The whole time we were in the house, we could hear a cat crying but couldn’t see it. We found him the very back of the carport, locked in a wire crate without food or water. If he hadn’t been crying, we wouldn’t have known he was there.
You probably noticed that we were very quiet for a few months on here. The reason was that we were up to our ears in animals & couldn’t share any details of the case. Over the 11 months of caring for them, neither the state or municipality helped us with finances or even one bag of food. We were told that we had to keep the animals safe. And that’s what we did!!
This experience nearly put us out of commission due to financial strain. If it wasn’t for some super kind people who knew what was going on, we wouldn’t be able rescue anymore. It was the longest 11 months, but it’s over now & the perpetrator is in jail.
We were able to save all of the animals, with the exception of one bunny, who passed while under anesthesia for grooming because his fur was so terribly matted. All the rest are in wonderful homes with only two still up for adoption; Blondie and MuMu, a bonded pair. If you’re interested, reach out!
