Meet Sheldon! This dapper little guy has gone through a lot of change over the past few months. His owner unexpectedly passed away, and he and the 2 dogs he grew up with were separated. Overnight he lost the only family he’s ever known, and went from living in a rural area with his pack to his new home as an only dog living in DC.

Sheldon was originally fostered with a large lab, 2 cats, and two teen boys (13 years old). He was OK with the boys, but hesitant and growly at first, and seems a little more hesitant around kids. He quickly attached to his foster mom and dad, Ashley & Dan, and followed Ashley everywhere. Sheldon is good with the family lab, but really wants his people’s attention and is learning to share. He ignores the cats, and gives them plenty of room.

Sheldon is a more mellow dog indoors, but he has his fun side too. He gets super excited when it's walk time or time for a car ride, and will jump up in pure joy with anticipation.  He loves getting out and about, and is the perfect road trip companion. He’s potty trained and good on leash. He may pull a little, but is very trainable. Sheldon is very connected to his person, but not needy or pushy for affection, he has some confidence and independence once he's in a stable home. He likes to put his head in your lap and will greet you with pure warmth, but also likes his own space on the couch to stretch out and relax.

This little guy is a true charmer, and will make some lucky owner an excellent companion and sidekick. Jamie has taken him all over the city, to Harper’s Ferry, and even on a trip up to NJ to meet her grandpa. Sheldon travels well and loves new adventures. He’s also good with other dogs, housetrained, and walks well on leash. We think Sheldon will do great in a home with another dog, and needs an owner who will love him but also lead him.

    UPDATE 7/25/18

Sheldon made his way to N. VA in late June and was fostered in a condo downtown. Sheldon took to city life right away. We discovered that he loves to see the world, and enjoys walks in the city and exploring new areas. He’s also very affectionate and bonded quickly with his foster mom, Jamie. As he settled in, he became a little too protective over his space, and was not reacting well to new dog walkers coming in to his home for mid-day breaks. We brought in a trainer to work with Sheldon, and Jamie started taking more of a leadership role, giving Sheldon structure and boundaries, and like most dogs, he responded quickly to having some direction and understanding the rules.

Sheldon improved with training in how he responded and respected Jamie's direction, but he remained protective of space and consistently had issues with the dog walker coming in for a midday break.  He was great as a companion and sidekick with Jamie, but she worked a full day and needed to us a dog walker. We didn't want Sheldon to be put in a situation that scared adn threatened him, so we made the decision to move him to a new foster home with a flexible schedule that did not require a midday dog walker.

    UPDATE 8/20/18

Sheldon is in a new foster home in Reston, VA, living with 2 other small dogs, and his foster parents, Greg & Margo. He settled in pretty quickly and has connected with Greg, who has been his walking partner since he arrived. Greg and Margo have a flexible schedule, and don't require a midday dog walker coming in, so that's been a better fit for Sheldon. Greg reports:

"Overall all things are going very well Sheldon aka Elvis (not sure he is adjusting to the name as we hoped) is a sweet dog. He stays close to me in the house and has settled down. He loves to walk and is always up for a walk. I mean ALWAYS up for a walk. Someone w/ a fence or active walker would be a great match.

I think he would be good an only dog, or with another dog his own size. He gets a little territorial with Cookie when she comes to close, but a quick correction and he stops and usually gets up and moves. We are not giving him a lot of boundaries to start (not allowing him on bed, couches, chairs, etc) until we know he can share well with other. So far, he's been respectful with our smaller dogs.

We had my brother in law visit this week, and Sheldon was a little weary but show no reactivity. He stuck by my side, but was respectful. Outside the house, he has done fine with other dogs and people. In the house, he needs a little work finding more comfort with strangers. It's nothing an experienced dog person couldn't handle. He really is a sweet dog looking for love and very well behaved. He's a great dog to take out and about too. His new owner will just need to be committed to building a routine, and working with him to feel more comfortable meeting visitors. We are really enjoying him."

    UPDATE 8/27/18

Foster mom, Margo, shares this update...

"Sheldon is definitely a dog's dog! He just started to get a little bit playful this week with a plush toy. He did show resource guarding behavior when either dog got within a 6 foot radius while he had the toy, but he responds quickly to correction, and allows me to take the toy from him without issue. I think he'd really like a doggy playmate, especially if his humans are frequently gone for more than a couple of hours at a time. He is so affectionate, and really, really wants to be loved! And, I think he's still processing all the changes of the past few months, and will do great with some stability and predictability.

He's a really good boy. He LOVES to walk, and like Greg said, he sometimes reacts to other dogs, sometimes not. Today, we passed a few dogs on our walk around the lake and he just walked on by with no reaction at all. We don't crate him anymore when we leave. He just finds a quiet spot and lies down to wait, usually by the door. When we crate him, he howls and cries, and he has great house manners, so we let him be.

He sleeps very nicely on his dog bed next to our bed at night, and never asks to get in our bed.  I don't know if he's a great fit for little kids under 10. He's probably better suited for older kids and calmer home. He needs someone committed to him and his training, and able to give him the companionship and stability that he desperately wants. And, if it takes a while to find that perfect combination, he's welcome to stay here as long as he needs to :)"

Sheldon needs an active home with a flexible schedule, preferably one that does not require a midday dog walker coming into the home. We think he would do well with a calm, confident pup companion, and would do best in a home without young kids. He will make an excellent companion for an active single person or retired couple, and would do well in a condo or single family home.

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster and want to learn more, please go to http://foster.worthydog.org and fill out an application.
