Rico was found running as a stray with another dog, and was picked up by Animal Control and taken to a rural shelter. He was very thin and tested positive for heartworm, as most outside dogs do. That can be a death sentence at rural shelters who can't afford the treatment, so we stepped in to give this cute little guy a chance. Rico has been in our care for the past 7 weeks, fully vetted and cured of heartworm, and is ready to make his way to N. VA to start his new life.

Rico is currently being fostered in a home with 4 other dogs, and has a favorite friend Boo who he cuddles with at night. He's house trained and potty trained, and his foster mom crates him when she goes to work. We've discovered that Rico LOVES toys, and always has a toy in his mouth that he proudly prances around the house with. He shares and trades his toys well, but always wants to have a toy on hand.

His foster mom, Terri, says that "he's so stinking adorable. He will reach for you with his little paw, and it touches my heart." She describes Rico as very laid back and a lapdog, and that he sticks close by his person and is a little shy after first when meeting new people, but warms up quickly.

    FOSTER UPDATE - 10/1/18

Rico is pretty shy and skittish on leash, and will try to run for it when he hears other dogs barking, even from afar. He gets nervous meeting other dogs on walks. He would be OK in a home or condo, but a quieter, lower traffic area would be best for him as he's fearful of loud, sudden noises. He's probably not the best city dog.

The first day he was here, Rico didn't each much, kept to himself, and stayed in the crate. But now he's more comfortable, and wants to sleep on the bed with us. He's eating plenty and drinking water now that he's comfortable. He also plays and gets excited when we're home. It's jsut takes him a few days to settle in and trust.

We think Rico is a little more comfortable living with other smaller dogs. He really liked having our family dog, Cody, here with us last weekend. We think he would do okay as an only dog though too. He's very attention seeking. Loves to be near you, asks for pets, and will follow you around everywhere. We're trying to break the habit of him tapping us on our face with his paw so we'll pet him. He's so cute though.

He would be best with an owner who is laid back and dog knowledgeable (or at least willing to be patient and learn).

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster and want to learn more, please go to http://foster.worthydog.org and fill out an application.
