A Little Bit About Me
Hopper - Hopper for short - is an easy-going guy a little down on his luck, looking for a new lease on life. Hopper joins us here at MH because his guardian became too sick to care for him, so this much loved dog finds himself in search of new love. Fortunately, he is VERY lovable. Hopper likes to play and cuddle a bit. He loves to be near his people - a LOT. He is actually not real comfortable being left home alone. We think he lived mostly outdoors, so he needs time to get used to being an indoor dog.
This smart guy also needs an improved exercise and dietary routine. The extra weight he currently carries will cause him pain eventually, if it doesn't already. Two good meals a day, with calories reduced to account for yummy training treats, will be just right. Build up his exercise slowly rather than immerse him suddenly in a routine that might injure him, unused as he is to a robust exercise regimen. The Australian Cattle Dog is an athletic, energetic breed that tends to gather girth without enough calorie burning.
One of the great attributes of cattle dogs (and herding dogs in general) is their intelligence. They actually thrive on being given a job. In the absence of actual herding, there are plenty of other dog sports to try. Start with the basics to give your intercommunication skills a quick boost.
Respectful kids should be great buddies for Hopper, but the Australian Cattle Dog, and middle aged dogs in general, are not usually interested in partying. They can be standoffish at first, but this guy warms up pretty quickly. Maybe some of his herding instinct will come out around youngsters, who knows?
Hopper likes other dogs but does not appreciate the younger, physical players at dog parks. He does not get along with every dog he meets, so be sure to match him with his new friends carefully.
This handsome - dare we say Hopper - guy needs some time to cope with all the changes in his life. In return he will totally change his new family's life for the better.
