Meet Hansel. This cutie LOVES his person or people. He wants to snuggle into your lap and quietly stay there. Hansel is shy at first, but he is friendly and deeply bonded to people he knows. Hansel has big beautiful eyes, a very soft coat, and such a sweet nature. Except for his separation anxiety, he is wonderfully quiet and well-mannered. He can also be funny and frisky (see video of Hansel running: https://youtu.be/03AOR2NyDSk). Yolo SPCA rescued Hansel from a shelter. He weighs 11 pounds and we think he is about 3-5 years old. Hansel has the coloring of a Jack Russell Terrier and what looks like the body of a Dachshund-Chihuahua mix. Hansel seems to be very healthy. In his foster home he takes long walks morning and evening – about 4 miles a day. He doesn’t need to walk that much, but he has no trouble keeping up. On cold mornings he sometimes gets a honk-cough, he has a couple of overly long teeth, and he has a loose dew claw, but none of those seem to bother him or cause problems. Hansel would probably do best in a home with a woman who is his primary caregiver, and who is home most of the time. It would be ideal if his future home had at least one small gentle dog who could be a pal to Hansel (Hansel doesn’t want to play). Hansel is easy to love. And, for someone who can work with Hansel’s fear of hands coming at his head, and Hansel’s separation anxiety, Hansel is an easy guy to live with. Besides cuddling, Hansel loves walks. We haven’t found any toys he wants to play with. He does love soft chews – especially Dentastixs, and kongs with peanut butter. If Hansel can’t be in your lap or in your arms, he likes to nest in a bed or pile of blankets where he can see you. Hansel is a smart little guy - a quiet and well-behaved velcro dog. He rarely barks (he will bark when other dogs in the house bark and when he is excited). He is not a door-dasher. You never have to call him or tell him to sit because he is always right at your feet (you do have to be careful not to step on him or trip over him). He walks really well on a leash (except when he tries to chase birds, which is hilarious). At his foster home (which has a dog door), he has reliably peed and pooped outside, and he has done no pee-marking. Hansel reacts to loud noises by cowering (no crying). He can be touched anywhere once he trusts you, he rides well in the car, he sleeps well through the night, and he is not a digger or chewer. While Hansel becomes extremely devoted to his person, he is really shy at first. Hansel loves to be cuddled and petted on his back. But Hansel is frightened by the hands of strangers (particularly men) coming towards his head, like a stranger reaching to pet him. We think a man may have hit Hansel. If Hansel is being held (where he can’t back up or get away) and a man reaches quickly for Hansel’s head, Hansel has snapped. For this reason, we recommend Hansel not be in a home with small children. Hansel is fine being around women and men (he prefers women) as long as they are not reaching for his head. Hansel is also fine if people put a treat in their hand and let Hansel come to them. In his foster home, Hansel chooses to snuggle with gentle dogs his size. But Hansel does not want to play – he will give a “back-off” growl to a dog trying to play with him. It’s not aggressive, and other dogs seem to understand this. Hansel has also done fine with cats, as long as the cats don’t want to play. What Hansel hates the most is being left alone. He has never been destructive, but he cries, which could cause problems in an apartment. He is less likely to cry if he is left with a dog pal and not confined. When you come home and pick him up, he wiggles so hard you have to hang on tight so he doesn’t fall. Hansel is a joy, and such a sweet, special boy. If you think Hansel would be a great companion in your home, please fill out an online application at https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/. Thank you.

For the fastest response, please submit an Application so we can help you with a good dog match. Thanks for considering giving a rescue dog a second chance at happiness in a loving home. If a dog is still posted on our website – the dog is still available for adoption. See more information about our adoption process and fees at  http://yolospca.org/adopt/adopting-from-ycspca/ . All our dogs are in foster homes (an advantage to adopters because we know the dogs). We do not have a shelter to visit. Because of coronavirus health advisories, our adoption events on Saturdays at Petco are on hold. But, if you submit an application we will arrange for you to meet dogs you are interested in that would be a good match. Our goal is to make the best match possible for the dog and for the human/s. Having our dogs live in foster homes gives us the opportunity to learn about each dog's personality and behavior. We give you as much information as we have about each dog based on our observations or information we’ve received. We rarely know with certainty the breed or age of our rescue dogs. If you are interested in any of our dogs, please fill out an application at  https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/ . Use just one application for any/all of our dogs you are interested in, or instead of the name of one dog, put multiple names or “not sure” on the application. Information on your application helps us know your situation so we can work with you to make a great dog-human match. Our dogs are not adopted on a first-come-first served basis. We are trying to make the best match possible. Yolo SPCA dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, heart worm tested, current on vaccinations, and are being treated with heartworm prevention and flea prevention. Adoption fees for dogs more than one year old is $150, and for puppies under one year old is $200.00. If you have questions, please e-mail ( dogs@yolospca.org ), and we will do our best to answer your email within 24 to 48 business hours. Donating to, or shopping at our SPCA Thrift Store supports our rescue efforts ( http://yolospca.org/about-our-thrift-store/ ). Yolo County SPCA is always looking for foster homes, volunteers ( http://yolospca.org/volunteer/ ), and donations ( http://yolospca.org/donate/ ). Thank you.
