Buzz is a 5 year old Lhasa Apso mix who weighs about 20 pounds. Buzz was originally an owner surrender to our rescue. He was adopted out 2 years ago but was recently returned to our rescue when his owner moved and felt she couldn't provide the right environment for him. Buzz has a non-shedding coat that will require regular grooming.

When Buzz first meets anyone he is on high-alert. He has what we refer to as “stranger danger” issues and will take a while to warm up to strangers. Buzz may bark or growl at you when you first meet him but if you give him time and space to feel comfortable before you know it he will be coming to you looking for pets. Within 24 hours of being in his foster home (and lots of treats) Buzz really began to open up and show his true personality. He warmed up fairly quickly the first day. He did not actively seek attention but instead chose to be close to his foster mom and just hung out. He allowed pets and love but didn’t exactly come looking for it at first. By day two he was actively looking for attention. He would come up and he would put his paws on you or just look up with his big eyes! Once he was comfortable he loved belly scratches, pets and being held or in his foster mom's lap. He hit it off instantly with the youngest dog in the home who is a 2 year old female Labradoodle. They could play all day! He gets along well with the older female doodle and he leaves the 17 year old senior dog alone. Buzz has not done well with male dogs in his foster home and therefore would not be an option to live with one. He has gotten along fantastically with all the female dogs he has met.

Buzz is a totally cuddler/snuggler/velcro dog. He likes to be near you and if you get up he will follow you. He is so excited when you get home! Whether you have been gone 10 minutes or 10 hours he will react the same way with wiggly butts and excited hops. However, Buzz does have some stranger danger and resource guarding issues. His foster noticed them after having him for about two weeks. Initially, Buzz slept in the bed with them but if they moved him or even touched him when he was on the bed he would growl and snap. He has bitten on about 3-4 occasions since being with his foster home. The first time he bit was when they went to go move him off the couch. He had been growling at their male dog and his foster mom went to move him and he turned around and bit her in two places on her hand. He did draw blood. She was able to get him off the couch by wrapping him in a blanket and putting him in his crate. After this first bite they immediately took away his bed and couch privileges. If he hopped onto the couch they would tell him “off”. He knows this command well but he will test you if he doesn’t want to do it. He also has a “bed/place” and “crate” command. They will tell him to go to his bed or crate if he is on the couch. They will not physically remove him because this will likely result in a bite.

You have to be firm with him or he will try to walk all over you. He also has taken well to a vibration collar. It quickly corrects his behavior like nuisance barking or growling. Buzz has also bitten when they have grabbed him when he did not want to be grabbed. Buzz loves his people but he does pick a favorite person in the home and if there are loud noises like laughter or yelling he does go on edge with barking and he will go guard his person. If you try to approach him/his person when he is guarding and he feels you are a threat he will put himself in front of them and may even lunge at you.

Buzz is completely house trained, crate trained and leash trained. His foster mom reports that he is incredibly smart and knows tricks like spin, sit pretty, roll over and shake. He does not chew on things that are not his but he does do some alert barking and occasionally he may bark for no reason but is easily shushed. Buzz does have a bad habit of digging and has dug under his foster moms fence. For this reason he cannot be left alone in the yard unattended.

We will be looking for a very specific home for Buzz to ensure that he thrives. We will be looking for a home that has experience with resource guarding and knows how to address it.

Buzz is only an option for an experienced dog owner in the last 3 years. We are looking for a home that understands resource guarding and understands how to address it. We will be specifically looking for that in the application. As cute as Buzz is he is not the dog for many homes. We will not consider a home with children.
