Meet Moose. What a cutie! Moose appears to be a Yorkshire Terrier mix. He is about 2 years old and he weighs around 8 pounds. Look at this fun video of Moose taking his favorite toy for a walk (https://youtu.be/AD_DTk96Awk). Sweet Moose is a tripod – a dog with 3 legs. Moose was found as a stray with a broken right hind leg. The wonderful vets at UC Davis did all they could, but his leg was causing him a lot of pain and was so badly broken it could not be repaired, so his right rear leg had to be amputated. Despite all he has been through Moose is bright, alert, and responsive. Understandably, Moose still has a lot of fear. Moose needs a person or people who will be with him most of the time, shower him with love, and patiently help him overcome his fears with positive training. Moose is initially reserved, but once he trusts you, he becomes a very affectionate, very loving velcro dog - always wanting to stay close.  He is nervous around strangers, but he is slowly learning that strangers can be nice (he is more reactive while being held, and does better meeting strangers when he is on the ground). Moose is good with men and women, but prefers women. We have not seen him around children. Because of his fear issues we don’t think he should be in a home with small children. Moose gets along very well with the cat in his foster home. He is nervous and sometimes reactive near unknown dogs. During initial dog meetings/sniffing Moose will sometimes bark and snap, although with more exposure he has gotten better. With a careful introduction he could become friends with a gentle dog his size. Moose also has separation anxiety and needs to be with his person/people as much as possible. When he has to be left alone, he does much better if he is given free access to his home. He is very reactive to being locked in a crate or a room or behind a baby gate (he shakes, trembles, stops eating, chews on the bars, barks, and tears up pee pads). Having a cat or dog companion, medication, and training could help him if he has to be separated from his person/people. When stressed, Moose does bark. Sudden movements or sudden head touching can frighten him, especially when he is sleeping. Despite his fears, mostly, Moose is a fun and loving little guy. He likes playing with toys, rolling around on the carpet, going on walks, following his foster mom around and sleeping on her lap, and he loves meal times. Moose rides well in the car. He is working on house training. Right now, he seems to need to go out at least every 5 hours and he can’t yet hold his pee overnight (he sleeps in a crate lined with pee pads). He is doing well with obedience training. He knows “Sit.” He is usually good at “Come.” And he is working on “Stay” and “Down.” He loves walks and is good on a leash - he doesn't pull, and he likes to stay close. If you think Moose would be a great companion in your home, please fill out an online application at https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/. Thank you.

For the fastest response, please submit an Application so we can help you with a good dog match. Thanks for considering giving a rescue dog a second chance at happiness in a loving home. If a dog is still posted on our website – the dog is still available for adoption. See more information about our adoption process and fees at http://yolospca.org/adopt/adopting-from-ycspca/. All our dogs are in foster homes (an advantage to adopters because we know the dogs). We do not have a shelter to visit. Because of coronavirus health advisories, our adoption events on Saturdays at Petco are on hold. But, if you submit an application we will arrange for you to meet dogs you are interested in that would be a good match. Our goal is to make the best match possible for the dog and for the human/s. Having our dogs live in foster homes gives us the opportunity to learn about each dog's personality and behavior. We give you as much information as we have about each dog based on our observations or information we’ve received. We rarely know with certainty the breed or age of our rescue dogs. If you are interested in any of our dogs, please fill out an application at https://form.jotform.com/52017002013129/. Use just one application for any/all of our dogs you are interested in, or instead of the name of one dog, put multiple names or “not sure” on the application. Information on your application helps us know your situation so we can work with you to make a great dog-human match. Our dogs are not adopted on a first-come-first served basis. We are trying to make the best match possible. Yolo SPCA dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, heart worm tested, current on vaccinations, and are being treated with heartworm prevention and flea prevention. Adoption fees for dogs more than one year old is $150, and for puppies under one year old is $200.00. If you have questions, please e-mail (dogs@yolospca.org), and we will do our best to answer your email within 24 to 48 business hours. Donating to, or shopping at our SPCA Thrift Store supports our rescue efforts (http://yolospca.org/about-our-thrift-store/). Yolo County SPCA is always looking for foster homes, volunteers (http://yolospca.org/volunteer/), and donations (http://yolospca.org/donate/). Thank you.
