This tall, dark, and handsome boy is Nugget!

Nugget is a very energetic young guy who looks like a Brittany spaniel mixed with a long-haired dachshund. He’s estimated to be around a year old and weighs about 16 lbs.

Nugget is an affectionate, fun-loving boy with lots of puppy energy and zest for life - which is pretty typical of a spaniel mix. You’d never know it now, but Nugget came to us from the Contra Costa County shelter with a right rear hip injury, so he wasn’t putting any weight on that leg. He had a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) surgery at UC Davis to remove the ball from the ball and socket joint of that hip and has been recovering for the last couple of months. And recover he has! He now loves to go for walks and zoom around his foster mom’s backyard at top speed - that injured hip is a distant memory! UCD diagnosed him with luxating patellas in both back legs, but that appears to be very mild now that his hip has healed, and doesn’t slow him down at all.

Nugget is house-trained and sleeps quietly in his crate overnight. He gets along great with his current doggie roommates (he has 6 of them right now!) but takes some time to warm up to new dogs and may do best as an only dog. We don’t know how he’d be with cats, but we think he’d probably like to chase them to try to convince them to play too. Because of his energy level, we think he’d do best in a home with kids 10 years and older.

Nugget is reactive to other dogs when out on walks and needs a family that can dedicate the time to work on his training. Ideally, he would be adopted by someone with reactive dog experience or that is willing to work with a positive reinforcement trainer.

Nugget loves to play with toys and does a pretty good job playing “fetch” with a ball. He also knows “sit” and “lay down.” Like most young dogs he likes to chew on things. One of his favorite things to chew is a beef hoof - to him, it’s kind of like an all-day sucker. He can sit on a floor pillow or sofa and chew on it all evening while watching TV with you.

Nugget is very affectionate and loves to stay close to his foster mom and follow her around, so he’d be perfect for someone who works from home. Nugget really loves to play and is looking for an active family that can keep up with his peppy personality. Due to his energy level and dog reactivity, Nugget wouldn't be a good fit to live in an apartment.

Does Nugget sound like a good match for you and your family? He’d love to meet you!

    Nugget's adoption fee is $350.

The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes.

Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption.
