Spunky, spunky, spunky! Nyala may be blind, but it will take you a while to even notice it because she lives confidently in her environment and does not let her blindness interfere with her enjoyment of life. It takes her just a day or so to learn a new location, and she will then scamper around freely, even running up and down stairs, hopping down off the sofa, and standing on her back legs to sniff hopefully around the counter where the dog food is kept. She is ultra reliably house-trained and will find the door and stand there to let you know she is ready to go out. And if you're not paying attention, she will scratch at the door to hurry you along. She similarly lets you know when she is ready to come back in, although if it's a nice, sunny day she may just enjoy basking in the yard for a while. Nyala is about 9 years old and weighs a little under 10 lbs. She seems to have been someone's beloved pet because she sure does expect you to share your snacks with her. (She may sing and yodel until you firmly tell her "no!") Maybe a bad diet gave her the severe dental problems she found herself with, although that will soon be behind her after her dental surgery in early April. Nyala gets along wonderfully with other dogs, even when they ignorantly barge into her. She also loves people, though she does find it startling when a new voice suddenly appears in "her" house and in this respect is a great watchdog. She walks really well and confidently on leash. Although it might seem that she should be listed as a Special Needs dog, Nyala is actually a lot easier to care for than most of the "normal needs" dogs we've seen. She checks things out, figures them out, then chills out, and just settles in to enjoy daily life, and her blindness is totally a nonissue. Still, because the average person won't consider adopting a dog with no eyes, she deserves some extra attention. Will you give it to her by visiting her album at http://imageevent.com/beales/fosters/nyala ?
