Our Gentle Giant is ready for adoption!

    Here is Cheeto's story:

Cheeto was first spotted in Wamba off of Richmond Road.  There were reports that a large dog had been spotted with a "cheese puff" container over his head. It was noted that he was scared and kept running into the woods.  Days would go by before there would be another sighting of this poor pup.  As the summer heat began to swelter, the weeks had passed by and Cheeto had not been seen.  Everyone had been concerned and searched and prayed for this dog. Most had all but given up hope. After 21 days from the first sighting, Cheeto was caught by dog rescuer, Greg King.  When Greg punctured the plastic bucket, Cheeto had passed out.

Cheeto was quickly transported to Pleasant Grove Animal Hospital where his journey to recovery began.  To say that Cheeto was emaciated was an understatement.  The doctors at Pleasant Grove immediately began to treat Cheeto.  A little over a week later Cheeto was released to the Texarkana Animal League where he continued his recovery.  When he was brought to the League, Cheeto was still very fragile and afraid.  He did not want to touch the cement driveway that led to the rescue building.  Cheeto was given his own kennel, his very own bed, food and water.   Although he was very shy, he did not shy away from food; he would eat like he would never eat again.

Cheeto was monitored closely, at first he would not leave his kennel, even to go potty.  However, one day a volunteer at TAL was able to coax him out of his kennel, into the yard and he went potty for the very first time!  This was a major milestone for all of us. As the days passed, Cheeto began to trust the volunteers that cleaned his kennel. He started to stand up and bark!  He stopped eating his food like he would never eat again, sometimes even waiting to eat until he was hungry.

Cheeto is still our gentle giant and has been with TAL since June 29, 2017.  In that time, Cheeto has made some amazing progress.  Today you will find him wandering around TAL hanging out with all the dogs.

He towers over the little Chihuahuas and Yorkies, as they all play.  He loves to howl, but only when you are not watching!  He loves exploring and looking to see where everyone is.  Cheeto is kind, smart and loving. He is still recovering but this amazing dog, that fought the odds that were against him, has a second chance at life!
