Calm, gentle Topi is a real gentleman. Although he is only 3 or maybe 4 years old, he is relatively low energy (for a terrier), with very nice house manners. He gets along very nicely with other dogs, and he was politely interested in the little kitties he met at the vet clinic. When he meets new people, this Rattie mix is very friendly, showing wriggling, wagging enthusiasm but no inclination to jump up on them. In the yard, he enjoys tranquilly exploring the territory or resting in the sunshine. Initially he was hesitant to come indoors when invited, looking a bit suspicious and ill at ease as though expecting to be scolded. But with repetition, he soon relaxed and now seems very comfortable lounging on his dog bed or the sofa. He does not mess with anything that he shouldn’t. In fact, he really doesn’t show any interest in toys. But he does appreciate his treats and shows such nice focus that training is likely to be easy. He does need a lot more practice walking on leash, as this is obviously a skill he was never introduced to before. Fortunately, he does not mind being picked up so it’s not hard to get around with him (although at 20.5 lbs., he is not exactly a feather). He goes readily into his crate at bedtime and sleeps there quietly all night long and just waits quietly while watching you get ready in the mornings. Car riding is another experience that seems to be new to him; at first it caused him quite some barky anxiety, but he is now getting used to it and doesn’t complain much. Now that he has learned the indoor-outdoor routine, his house-training has been very reliable. All in all, this wonderfully sweet fellow just needs the chance to get over the “humps” of new situations that he hasn’t been previously exposed to. But he is resilient and adaptive, and as his world grows, so does his confidence. With a dedicated person or family of his own, Topi is going to really blossom into an awesome companion. Please check out more photos of him in his album at http://imageevent.com/beales/fosters/topi.
