In a familiar, comfortable environment, Jonathan is an affectionate, well-behaved, and lively fellow, who loves to play with toys, snuggle in your lap, and follow you around the house to "help" with whatever you are doing. In his early years (he's just 3), he must have been under-socialized, though, because new situations (new people, cats, vacuum cleaners, bigger dogs, etc.) make him nervous and agitated. That agitation leads him to bark at the new thing for the first several minutes until he can feel assured that he is safe. An unfamiliar person's sudden attempts to reach for him when he is feeling uncomfortable may provoke a defensive snap, so Jonathan is not reliable around anyone who won't give him time to warm up first. Once he accepts the newcomer, he is a friendly, happy, life-of-the-party guy. He will sit on command for a treat and usually comes when called. He loves to go for walks and does great on a loose leash, neither pulling nor lagging behind. Weighing 12 lbs., he's easy to pop in a crate for a car ride or to pick up for some special cuddle time. Jonathan loves to play with his canine foster siblings, especially when they consent to wrestle with him. In fact, he can be rather a pest about it, and they have to tell him to back off sometimes, which he does...for a few minutes anyway. When Jonathan visited cats at PetSmart, he found them to be very worrisome and bark-worthy, and it is doubtful whether he could learn to settle down and live harmoniously with one. His house-training has been excellent in foster care, and his indoor manners are perfect. He is looking for a family who will continue giving him gentle, safe, frequent exposure to new situations so that he can develop the confidence he needs to welcome newcomers without fear and to get full enjoyment out of every day.
