Meet Betsy, a bodaciously cheerful 15-lb. Rat Terrier, who's about 10 years old. Betsy got a rough start in a puppy mill, where she likely lived in a cage and was used to breed litters of puppies, but that's all in the past. Now she's learning how good a dog's life can really be! Betsy loves dog--all dogs! (And she even likes the cat at her foster home.) She'll definitely need a dog buddy in her new home, because being with dogs makes her feel secure. She loves trotting around the yard with her canine foster siblings. She has learned to walk quite nicely on a leash when she can follow another dog, but nothing beats roaming and running safely off leash, so her new home should have a fenced yard too. In addition to her own kind, people are also cool in Betsy's view. She'll eagerly sniff a stranger's shoes and accept a treat. After she really knows and trusts you, she'll let you pick her up, but that may take a while. She's OK with quiet, respectful children who visit, but the activity level of typical young kids makes her retreat to her crate, so she would like a quiet home without little tykes. Indoors, Betsy is calm and interested in what's going on. She likes to hang out in the kitchen, hoping to snag a dropped yummy. This girl is never late for a meal! Yes, her favorite activity has got to be eating! And she'll let you know when she thinks it's time to eat. Her foster parents are teaching her good manners by giving her a bit of time-out if she becomes too demanding, but truthfully they're delighted to see this former "mill inmate" show such enthusiasm! Betsy's second favorite activity is napping--on the bed with her humans, dogs, and family cat. Betsy is mostly house-trained, but unsurprisingly given her history, she sometimes has to use a pee pad if she can't get outside in time. She takes an inexpensive medicine called Proin to help with bladder control. Overall, her vet says Betsy's in great health with a few typical ailments. She has a slight hearing loss, a bit of morning stiffness (which is helped by taking a daily joint supplement), and an allergy that causes some coughing in the springtime and responds well to 1/2 tablet of a common antihistamine. She also has a tooth that doesn't pain her but needs removal. Unfortunately due to scheduling delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, her appointment won't be till the end of October. In the meantime, make a beeline to her online photo album at https://imageevent.com/newrattitude/betsy , be ready to fall in love, and then begin your application process. Sure, we know that life is merrier with a Rat Terrier, but it will be even better with beautiful Betsy.
