Meet Peaches! Peaches was adopted as an adolescent pup from a rural VA shelter and lived with the same owner for the past two years. Her owner recently moved to a complex that does not allow "pit bulls," so Peaches was separated from her family, and sent to live with the owner's mom until a solution could be found.  This was not a great fit for Peaches or the grandma who is not well equipped in her 70's to manage a young, 65lb, active bully girl. Peaches wasn't getting the walks or socialization she needed, and this grandma needed help. One of our awesome foster families, MK & Bryan, live only a few doors down and saw her outside struggling to walk Peaches one day. Once they learned more about the situation, they contacted WDR and offered to foster this lovely bully girl. Peaches is with us today because they stepped up to help their neighbor and pup in need.

MK & Bryan are currently fostering our handsome bully boy, Freddie, and the two dogs met in the neighborhood and became fast friends. They started taking them on walks together, first to help the grandma, and second to get them familiar before fully integrating Peaches into their home. Now, you can often find Peaches and Freddie snuggling on the bed for nap time or trotting side by side on walks around the neighborhood.

Peaches lived with both kids and dogs in her former home, and has been a great companion for Freddie, who is still perfecting his doggy social skills. She is very submissive around him, and very friendly with the other dogs she meets. She will try to play with Freddie, but if he doesn't engage, she leaves him alone. Peaches is more active than Freddie and needs more exercise. She likes to zoom around the yard, needs her daily walks, and enjoys a steady dose of people and squirrel watching from the front window. She is always wagging her tail and will spend hours just exploring the backyard. Peaches is a few pounds overweight, and quickly overheats on hot days, but enjoys jogging and walking in general. She's not a couch potato, and will move when you move to be part of the action.

MK & Bryan are working to slim her down and perfect her leash walking skills. She doesn't bark or show any reactivity on leash, but she still pulls from excitement when she's exploring. MK describes Peaches as an extremely snuggly and sweet dog who wants to please you. She's a little shy when she meets someone new, especially men, but does warm up. She loves to be around people and is a very affectionate, loving dog. She's housetrained and has such good house manners that they have not had to crate her.

    FOSTER UPDATE - 9/22/19

Peaches has lost 5 lbs and is getting regular walks and playtime. She just had a dental cleaning too...she's feeling good, looking good, and flourishing in her foster home.

Peaches is such a sweet, loving soul. She adores her foster mom and follows her everywhere, and clearly feels most comfortable around women. She loves her foster dad too, and he's excellent with dogs, but she still feels more content with mom. This is not uncommon for many dogs we rescue, and if they were ever mistreated, it was more often than not by a male. She's timid and still building her confidence, and needs a family who will give her lots of TLC and time to trust fully. She would do well with another confident, playful dog in the home who she can bond with and learn from. She likes other dogs and is great with kids, having lived most of her life with young children.

Peaches' favorite things include being petted and cuddled, and spending time in the backyard. She can stay outside and entertain herself for hours if you let her. We believe that Peaches was over-crated and ignored in her last home, so being outside, lying in the sun, and just exploring brings her great joy. We would love a nurturing home for her with another playful dog and a fenced yard. She's come a long way in her foster home in a very short time, and has discovered the joy of snuggling on the couch, playing with toys, and romping in the backyard with her new BFF, Freddie.

While Peaches is a submissive pup, she's also learning how to express her wishes too. When she feels you aren't paying her proper attention, she may snort to get your interest. We know there is a sassy side of Peaches just waiting to emerge, but you will not find a more sweet or loving dog. She will make an awesome companion to some lucky adopter. Could that be you?
