BARNEY NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!

Name: Barney    Breed: Lab/Bassett Mix

Approximate Age: 3 years     SEX: male

Approximate Weight: 30 pounds

Has Lived With: dogs

Currently Living at: DC foster

Special adoption considerations: Being treated for heartworm in South Carolina.

FOSTER UPDATE: Barney is great with my cats, pretty much ignores the adult cats but I have two foster kittens right now and we do spend a lot of time trying to keep him from chasing them and barking at them since they are very small and interesting for a active dog like Barney. Other than that Barney is an absolutely great dog! He is a medium energy dog that loves his walks in the morning. At events Barney absolutely loved all the kids there and he was very tolerant of their touching and pawing him. He walks fabulously on a leash, but has some leash reactivity when he sees other dogs, and sometimes will bark at other people while on a leash, although he has responded well to training on this. At home he is very chill and has learned that cuddling is the absolute best thing ever! He is very smart and listens extremely well. He sleeps well in his crate, although he has now graduated to the dog bed in our room and also does very well there. He has had no accidents in the house and I feel very comfortable leaving him out of his crate with my dogs when we leave the house. He seems to be very familiar with living in a house and completely surprised us the first night he was here by coming in and out of our doggie-door whenever he wanted!  Barney will make an absolutely great companion and any family will be extremely lucky to have him!

Meet Barney! This outgoing 3-year-old lab/bassett mix boy is as sweet as can be! At about 30 pounds, he is very kind, energetic and affectionate toward everyone he meets! Barney is good with dogs, but we haven't had a chance to see him interact with kids or cats yet. If you have them, let us know, and we'll find out more.

Barney has a playful, active and curious personality and will need mental and physical stimulation on a daily basis. He loves playing with other dogs and always looks forward to his dog walks, so trips to the dog park or doggie daycare would be great!

Barney is still a young dog, and he will need a committed owner to provide training and exercise to be a well-behaved dog.

Barney is dreaming of finding a warm and loving forever home! All he needs is a caring person or family to give him all the love and care (and treats!) he deserves!

Like most shelter dogs, Barney may need a refresher on housetraining. He is likely crate trained.

Barney has tested positive and is being treated for for Heartworm disease. Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.  Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative.

The adoption fee for this dog is $450, which includes the cost of routine vetting, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and heartworm treatment. If you are interested in adopting, please download our Adoption Questionnaire and email it to Emily Jagdmann at emilyj@luckydoganimalrescue.org!
