Currently Living at: Foster home in Puerto Rico; Lugaro will need a foster home - or forever home! - for when she arrives in the D.C. area.

Meet sweet Lugaro! This 5+ years old shepherd mix, weighing in at approximately 45 lbs., found herself at a shelter through no fault of her own. When she was rescued by a fantastic team in Puerto Rico, she was extremely malnourished and had very little fur. Thanks to their love and care, she has recovered and is now ready to come to D.C. for a second shot at a happy life! Could it be with you?

Lugaro is an older dog, but that doesn't slow her down! She loves exploring and going on walks, so her new adopters will need to provide her with plenty of exercise and playtime to keep her happy and healthy! Fun Fact: Lugaro was named after the first woman in history to run as an independent candidate for governor of Puerto Rico!

Lugaro's new person or family will need to make sure she gets lots of socialization to keep up the good social skills she has already. And, like all dogs we adopt out, she should go to obedience classes to build a strong bond with her people, and help her become a well behaved companion and family member. Lugaro seems to like all the people and pups she meets, and can't wait to wiggle her way into your heart and home!

She gets along with other dogs, but we haven't had the opportunity to test her with cats or kids yet. If you have them, please let us know and we'll do our best to find out! Lugaro would make a great addition to an existing pack — or she'd love to soak up all the attention as an only dog!

Like most shelter dogs, Lugaro may need a refresher on house-training. She is likely crate trained.
