Sweet boy looking for his forever home

DIETER NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!

Name:   Dieter       Best Guess for Breed:   Lab and terrier mix

Best Guess for Age:   1.5 years as of March 2024

Approximate Weight:   60 lbs

Gets Along With:  We haven't seen Dieter with kids but he can be tested. Dieter has lived with a cat, but we always recommend slow introductions. Dieter gets along well with other dogs in playgroups in the shelter, but we think he would like to shine as the only dog in the home.

Currently Living at:   DC area foster home

Special Adoption Considerations: Dieter loves his people more than anything and would prefer to be the only dog in the home to soak up all the love! He has so much fun with his friends at boarding and will need to continue to be socialized regularly.

Dieter is thriving with his current training schedule and will need to continue with training with his new family to help him continue being the best pup he can be! Danny Kampf, owner of Atlas Dog House, where Dieter currently resides, is offering a free training session for Dieter and his new family!

Dieter is Looking For: A forever home - could it be with you?  I enjoy long walks to the park and falling asleep on the couch to re-runs of Friends, Phoebe is my favorite.  Other dogs have told me my German accent is a bit thick, but I am working on my English.  Can't wait to debate the merits of strudel with you over treats, walks, and trips to Starbucks for pup cups!

What My Foster Says About Me:  Dieter is such a great pup. He loves belly rubs and cuddling - having him melt into you just makes the day great! He is incredibly smart- knows sit, down, touch, wait, etc. He will wait until released to eat his meals. I can pull a bowl or a treat away from him with no issues. He responds well to verbal corrections and a finger snap signal. He's a huge cuddle bug who loves pets and snuggling!! He sleeps through the night on a dog bed and can be left in a home for several hours without needing to be crated. He's had no potty accidents since being with me. He's fantastic at the dog park- loves to interact with other dogs and play fetch. He's been great with strangers on the street.

He is still figuring out the rules, but is very easy to correct and doing great with training! He loved his friends at boarding and loves to play all day! He waits to come in/out of the house after you and walks at heel with a leash protocol he learned in training that keeps the human in charge. He is quick to correct on walks and is super food motivated and that helps with training as well.

Dieter is really good about being chill in the home and expending his youthful energy outside. Since he's a young dog, he needs a lot of stimulation, but he loves long walks, hikes, playing catch, a treat kong, or lickmat to stay busy.

Dieter continues improving with walking on leash- pulling can be addressed with minimal corrections. We've seen improvements with his leash reactivity and our friend's confident, friendly dog joined us for a trail walk. Dieter interacted well with the other dog during introductions, and on the trail walk, Dieter took cues from the male dog on how to perceive other dogs on leash as not a threat. Dieter was much calmer and tolerant of other dogs during the entire walk.

By himself, Dieter continues to improve his ability to watch and let leashed dogs pass him while he waits, through counter conditioning of treats and praise.

He's overall a fun guy to have around, and because he's chill in the home - a great WFH companion as well.
