sweet older gent seeking fresh start and love!

JULIUS NEEDS A FOREVER HOME!!!!

Come meet Julius and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (April 7th) from 12-3 pm at the PETSMART in ALEXNADRIA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)!

Name:  Julius      Best Guess for Breed: Shepherd mix

Best Guess for Age:  7 years as of January 2024      SEX:  Male

Approximate Weight:  57.6 lbs

Gets Along With:   Julius does well with other dogs. He has done well with the children he has met; however, he has not lived with them to our knowledge. Julius should not go to a home with cats.

Currently Living at:  DC area foster home

Special adoption considerations: Dogs from Puerto Rico have a major transition to go through when they arrive and will need humans who are very committed to socialization. We think Julius would do best with either a resident dog or a family who can make sure he can go on walks regularly with other dogs, visit the dog park, or go to doggie daycare to learn the ropes.

Additionally, Julius is a truly Lucky Dog! He tested positive for Heartworm disease but has already been treated! Heartworm is not contagious to people or other pets, but results from mosquito bites.  Heartworm, if left untreated, is life threatening, but after treatment, dogs that were heartworm positive should suffer no significant long-term effects so long as they are kept on a monthly heartworm preventative. We are happy to talk more in depth about heartworm disease and treatment during the screening process.

Julius is Looking For: His forever family! This sweet gent is well out of the puppy yips - he's an all-around great gent. He landed in a Puerto Rico shelter and well, if you know the situation with the sheer numbers of stray dogs - satos - down there, you know he's not likely to get a good forever home down there. The shelter staff love him and want him to get the soft landing he deserves. So they are sending him our way for just that.

Sniffy walks and exploring his new environment by his humans' side are on his wish list. Quality kibble and a cushy dog bed too. Seeing snow for the first time would be awesome as well but well, he knows that's not guaranteed here the way things have gone the past couple years. But - he wants nothing more than to be under his own roof, safe and loved for all his days. In exchange, he promises warmth and love and adoring gazes and all the loyalty in his heart.

What do you say? Is Julius the companion you have been seeking?

What My Foster Says About Me:

  • Cuddles, cuddles, and more cuddles – he loves his people and loves nothing more than to cuddle up on you as you watch a show on the couch or get his paws up your lap while you sit at your laptop for a quick bit of love. Love hugging, cuddling dogs? Look no further!
  • Going on walks (and he isn’t bothered passing other walkers and dogs), especially if that means he sees a squirrel that he can get excited about

  • Goofing around with toys. Julius hasn’t shown to be a fanatic of toys yet but he definitely likes to goof around with toys and balls from time to time.
  • Sleeping in.. Julius isn’t the type to wake you up, as he’ll usually still be snoozing! He will wake up whenever you do!
  • He loves a good treat (likes meat-flavored treats best) and is good about eating, but he isn’t the type to eat all in one sitting or get overly excited about his regular meals. He is pretty relaxed in that way.

**** I have been giving him yoghurt and pumpkin puree Kongs (frozen) and he likes those.

  • He likes to sniff a pup to say hello if around each other, but often he is just really relaxed and focused on his own sniffing of the ground, etc.
  • People.. he loves to go up and say a quick hello (he doesn’t jump, he just gives a sniff depending or lets someone give a quick pet (and maybe a quick lick!)).
  • Comfortable places to sleep. I have worked long hours this week and he has found many comfortable places to sleep so that he could stay near me.
