LARSON

Come meet Larson and other great adoptable dogs this Sunday (March 3rd) from 12-3 pm at the PETSMART in ALEXANDRIA (3351 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22305)!

Male

30 pounds
Best guess for breed: Lab mix

Best guess for age: 1.5-2 years as of February 2024

Sourdough pretzel. This is how Larson's fosters describe him when he sleeps. He came into the shelter with a terrible back wound and a badly injured leg. The leg had to be amputated. The back wound has healed, leaving behind a design that looks like the top of a sourdough pretzel when he is curled up in sleep.

This dog is a gem. He is a friendly and snuggly boy who has brought his fosters so much joy.

In the home, he matches his fosters' energy - when they're chill, he's chill. When they're up for a midday game of tug or command training session, he's right there! He entertains himself well by watching the world go by outside the window or with squeaky stuffies or long-lasting treats. If he needs to go potty, he goes to the back door and waits quietly to be let out. He has a crate where he goes if he wants a nap in a dark place during the day; he also sleeps there quietly overnight and when his fosters are out for a few hours during the day. He comes immediately when called in the home.

Larson is motivated by praise, treats, and toys, and that has made training him so much fun. In the time his fosters have had him, he has learned Sit, Stay, Wait, Lay down, Goodnight (used to have him go into his crate at any time), Quiet, Find it, and Focus.

And he is such a great buddy on walks! He tippy-taps with excitement when he knows an outing is coming, but responds to the Wait or Stay command to get leashed up. Every excursion is a joyful one; he loves being out in the fresh air, loves sniffing (even when it's the same fence line he has passed every day for weeks), and absolutely loves seeing other people and dogs out and about. He's so friendly and playful that he'd play with every dog if he were allowed. He will leave less exuberant pups alone if they don't respond to his play bows.

He rides well in the car and has done wonderfully in boarding when his fosters went out of town. He's happy to engage in long, vigorous play sessions in boarding - neither he nor the other dogs notice he has only three legs! He has become a staff favorite in boarding, and they were sad when he left the last time he was there.

He has come such a long way from the scared, injured pup he was. Now he likes being tucked in for naps, gives big sighs to show how content he is, goes to sleep with his head on his foster while she works, and asks for belly rubs. Larson is eager to lavish all his tail wags, adoring gazes, and loyal companionship upon his forever family. They all will be very lucky to have each other.

Gets Along With: Other dogs! We haven't seen him with kids or cats but he can be tested.

Currently Living at:  DC area foster home

Special adoption considerations:   He's a tripod. He doesn't even notice.
