Are you interested in any other dogs?
Please list rescue.
Is everyone in the home on board with adopting a new dog? (If not, the interview needs to end. We will not finalize an adoption unless everyone is in agreement)> Choose one: Yes No
Living accommodations? If apartment or condo, make sure there are no restrictions in their lease, also if renting discuss taking the dog with them when they move (finding another dog-friendly appt).
What is your daily schedule like? (try to guage how much alone time the dog will have)
Do you feel you have enough time for a new dog between work and/or kids, social activities, travel, etc.? (PLEASE emphasize how much time and effort goes into being a dog-owner).
Do you have a fenced in yard? How will you give your dog enough exercise? (fenced in yard is not a requirement, as long s the dog has safe and humane means of exercise).
Do you understand that rescues go through a period of adjustment that can include accidents, chewing/destructive behavior, shyness, etc? Are you committed to giving your new dog time to acclimate t his/her new environment? (let potential adopters know that there is no set amount of time for adjustment period, and that some dogs need days while others need months. Make sure they are prepared for this).
In addition to the adjustment period, some other things adopters should expect is a dog that may not want to eat, may have diarrhea from nervousness, or not poop at all. They may be aloof and need some space before warming up. (this is all normal behavior for a rescue, please make sure adopters understand this is all part of the process).
How will you handle accidents or destructive behavior? Would you regret adopting the dog if this were to happen? (if potential adopters scoff at accidents or chewing they may not be a good fit).
Do you plan on crating your new dog? (Most dogs here are used to being in a crate, and we don't want to set the dog up for failure by giving them the opportunity to get into mishcief or hurt themselves).
Are you willing to give your new dog 2 weeks to bond and get used to his/her new family? That means limiting visitors and other dogs tot he home. (please get a firm commitment from them)
Do you plan on taking your new dog to obedience training or enlisting the help of a private trainer? Do you feel comfortable reaching out to your vet for guidance and/or advise? (training is great for the dogs AND their owners, and can be great for socialization).
How do you plan on introducing your new dog to your current pets? Do you feel good about the meet and greet? Do you understand they cannot be left alone together unsupervised for several week, or even months? Skip if there are no other animals int he house. (the answer you want is SLOWLY. Dogs should be introduced on neutral territory with 2 or more people present in case of an incident, owners need to keep a sharp eye on body language. If cats at home, the cat should have an area they can "escape" to for personal space, somewhere the dog cannot go).
Do you understand that becoming a dog-owner is an added financial responsibility, and are you prepared to add that to your life? (there are monthly, yearly and lifetime costs associated with owning a dog. In addition, there can be costly and unplanned emergencies).
If kids in the household, Who is is going to have the main responsibility of the care of the dog? Feeding, grooming, walking, playing and training? (if the answer is the kids, discuss how that is not necessarily the reality and if the kids are not up to the task the parents will need to take over. Ideal answer "All of us").
What are you plans for the dog if you go on vacation or travel for holidays? Are there any vacations coming up in the near future? (If there is a vacation in the near future, you may want to suggest they either postpone the adoption or change plans if possible).
